What is cement joint mortar?

Cement joint mortar, also known as grouting cement or grouting mortar, is the material used to fill the joints between ceramic pieces (tiles, stoneware, porcelain, or encaustic tiles).

Its main function is to seal and protect the joints, preventing water seepage, dirt accumulation, and movement of the pieces.

Types of grouting mortar

There are different types of grouting mortars depending on the use and installation conditions:

Traditional cement joint mortar

Ideal for interiors and dry areas. Easy to apply and available in multiple colors.

Flexible joint mortar

Contains additives that improve its elasticity, recommended for underfloor heating or areas with temperature changes.

Waterproof or epoxy joint mortar

Perfect for bathrooms, showers, or kitchens, where high resistance to moisture and chemicals is needed.

How to choose the right grout

When choosing a grout, consider:

  • Type of tile: porcelain, ceramic, natural stone…


  • Joint width: there are specific grouts for thin joints (1-3 mm) or wider joints (up to 20 mm).


  • Location: interior, exterior, wet or dry areas.


  • Color: choose a shade that matches or contrasts with your wall covering to achieve the desired aesthetic effect.

How many kilos of grout are needed to grout a bathroom?

It depends on the size of the bathroom, the tile format, and the width of the joints.

As a reference, 1 kg of grout usually covers between 3 and 6 m² of surface area.

A standard bathroom of 5–6 m² may require between 2 and 4 kg of mortar.

How much joint mortar is needed per m² of floor?

For 2 mm joints and 30x30 cm tiles, the approximate consumption is 0.4 to 0.5 kg/m².

If the joints are wider, consumption can increase to 1 kg/m².

Can the same joint mortar be used on floors and walls?

Yes, although for floors it is recommended to choose a mortar that is more resistant to wear and moisture, especially for outdoor or high-traffic areas.

How long does joint mortar take to dry?

Drying time varies depending on the brand and environmental conditions, but it is usually between 24 and 48 hours before allowing heavy use or cleaning of the surface.
